What Makes a Cozy Home? Three Simple Things.

Coziness is one of those things that you can just feel when you step into a home. There isn’t really a certain design or even a color scheme that defines whether a room is cozy or not. And although “cozy” is often a nice way to say that a room is shoebox-sized, even large rooms can still have that comfy vibe. But there are few details that can make a world of difference when it comes to creating a homey, cozy space.ย

  1. Lighting

To me, lighting is hands down THE easiest way to instantly make a room feel cozy. There’s a reason fireplaces always seem so homey and inviting, not only because the create visions of snuggling under thick blankets with snow falling softly outside, but also because they give off that warm, soft light that just bathes a room in comfort.

Using softer bulbs, rather than bright white, can cast a warm glow over any room no matter the decor or style, and it’s a cheap and simple way to make any room just a little cozier.

2. Touchable furniture

When I step into a cozy home, my first instinct is usually to curl up in an armchair, pull out a book, and find a furry animal to cuddle with. Although homes with modern or minimalistic designs look pretty in magazines, they’re not always the most inviting to spend any significant amount of time in.

Soft, touchable furniture, throw pillows, rugs, etc. make a room seem so much more inviting. Even just a thick, chunky-knit blanket draped across the couch can make a home instantly seem cozier. Basically anything you’ll want to curl up and hibernate in qualifies as cozy.

3.ย Natural materials

Hardwood floors, stone fireplaces, flowers or plants. Incorporating any natural materials into a home will make it seem a little warmer and comfier. Sometimes when people think cozy they think “dark,” with dark floors, dark lighting, and dark furniture, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Even with lots of wood in a room, lighter walls and accent pieces can offset the darkness without losing all that coziness. Plus, whitewashed wooden furniture is so in right now!

The ultimate goal in creating a cozy home is creating a space that you (and everyone else) will want to curl up in and stay awhile. The only tricky part, then, is just making it just as gorgeous as it is cozy ๐Ÿ˜‰
